Gippsland United Men had the longest trip in BigV basketball on the weekend. Mildura Heat hosted the visiting men on Saturday night and couldn’t contain dynamic duo of Brandon Armstrong and Billy Hughes.
Coach Scott McKenzie was looking forward to this game as an opportunity for the whole squad to spend some time together off the court as a group to build on team chemistry. While the team have been playing quality basketball this trip allowed players to get to know each other and enjoy each others company away from the court.
The team continued to be a menace on the defensive end of the floor. With 14 steals for the game and forcing 26 turnovers from the Heat, the work rate and effort protecting their own basket and converting that on the offensive end of the floor. The work rate continued at our end of the floor with 20 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second chance points.
In the end the spread of scorers, and spacing that was created by the shooting ability of Brandon and Billy was the difference. Between the two of them they scored 53 points with ten 3 pointers. The United men finished the game 34 point winners in what was a complete performance.
A top of the table clash waits for the men this week, we host the visiting and ladder leaders Pakenham Warriors. It is going to be a terrific match with it being a potential Grand Final preview.
